Guangzhou received 16.96 million visitors and earned a total tourism income of 12.209 billion yuan ($1.807 billion) during Spring Festival (February 4-10), an increase of 9.74% over last year, according to official statistics.
A total of 3,882,200 tourists visited the city’s 38 major scenic spots included on the holiday statistics list, an increase of 10.22% over the same period last year. It generated 353 million yuan revenue, 18.71% higher than that in 2018.
The income of the city’s 13 key catering enterprises included in the holiday statistics list reached a record high of 212 million yuan, a yearly increase of 10.1%. Meanwhile, the income of 14 key retail enterprises in the city was 847 million yuan, up 3.4% over last year.
Most of the tourist destinations in Guangzhou, especially the city's landmark Canton Tower, saw a surge of tourists during the seven-day holiday.
Traditional Cantonese customs like flower fairs, lion dances and lantern shows rolled out across the city, attracting visitors from home and abroad. “Guangzhou is full of flowers everywhere,” said Ivanov from Russia. “It’s a beautiful city, and my kids and I really like to spend the warm winter here.”
The city’s popularity and good reputation have been very much enhanced by promotional activities and the strategy of branding Guangzhou as a Flower City. During the Spring Festival, 11 flower fairs and one floating flower fair were held across the city. At the same time, Guangzhou launched a flower fair in the United States to publicize the city’s scenic spots as well as its unique culture, which attracted significant attention among global media.
Guangzhou’s strong appeal to tourists also lies in its convenient transportation system. Many visitors speak highly of it, especially the city’s connection to a great many domestic and international cities via high-speed railway or direct air flights.
