The People's Government of Guangdong Province issued the list of Guangdong province key cultural relics protection units, of which three places in Haizhu, namely Chigang Tower (赤岗塔), the South Stone Prison Site (南石头监狱遗址), and the Site of First National Labor Congress (第一次全国劳动大会旧址), were included.

Historically, Chigang Tower was a required stop for foreign business people entering Guangzhou, who would know they have arrived in the city when they saw the tower. Chigang Tower (Photo/WeChat account: gzhzfb)

The South Stone Prison Site used to be the largest prison in the province during the Republic of China period (1912-49). It signifies the revolutionary struggle of CPC members in their pursuit of freedom and liberation. The South Stone Prison Site (Photo/WeChat account: gzhzfb)

The Site of First National Labor Congress was built in the 1920s and consists of two buildings in the north and south. The Western-style concrete main building in the north was the office of the Guangdong Machinery Union, while the auditorium with a brick and wood structure in the south was the site of the First National Labor Conference.
