Great art works to be displayed at int'l art fair

One of China's three biggest international art events, the 25th Guangzhou International Art Fair (Autumn) kicks off in the Nanfeng International Convention and Exhibition Center today and will last through the weekend.

Gathering exhibitors and galleries from around the world, the expo will spread over 20,000 square meters and feature modern and contemporary art works and designs of different eras and genres, encompassing traditional Chinese paintings, oil paintings, sculptures and other art forms.

A main part of the art feast, masterpieces by internationally reputed artists like Zhou Chunya (周春芽) and Yue Minjun (岳敏君) will be on display, along with works of modern China's painting masters like Qi Baishi (齐白石), Xu Beihong (徐悲鸿) and Wu Changshuo (吴昌硕).

Oil painter Zhou Chunya's Spring is Coming was sold for 86.25 million yuan (US $12.45 million) on August 18 at a Beijing auction, setting a record price for the artist.

An exhibition themed on Huang Yongyu's (黄永玉) art works will be a highlight of the fair. Widely regarded as a legendary Chinese artist, Huang, now 96, is best known in art circles for his ink paintings marked by an animated palette and bold brush strokes which deliver primitive beauty.

International exhibition zones will greet visitors with a grand presentation of premium art pieces from foreign countries and regions.

Dozens of creations by 22 top-ranked graduates from Central Academy of Fine Arts and Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts will shine on the event, offering exhibition-goers a glimpse into the strength of youth who are expected to breathe fresh air into the world of art.

Sponsored by the Guangzhou's municipal government, the art gala hopes to build an platform of art exchange for local and international galleries, artists and art institutions, as well as offers artistic and cultural feasts to the general public.
