The International Symposium of the Maritime Silk Road was held on 6 November at the Macao Tower Convention & Entertainment Centre.

Over 100 participants from different sectors attended the symposium, including government representatives from Chinese mainland cities along the ancient Maritime Silk Road, experts and scholars from home and abroad, members of the Cultural Heritage Committee and the Cultural Consultative Committee of Macao, and professors and students from local higher education institutes.

The event was aimed to promote academic research on the universal value and conservation of ancient Maritime Silk Road heritage and pool efforts to seek a place for it on the World Heritage List.

During the symposium, experts and scholars from around the world exchanged ideas and made presentations on topics such as “the Formation and System of the Maritime Silk Road”, “the Maritime Silk Road and Its Underwater Archaeology” and “the Cultural Exchanges Between Countries Along The Routes and Their Respective Heritage”.

A cooperation agreement was also signed between the State Administration of Cultural Heritage of China and the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture of Macao SAR Government. Both sides pledged to work together in preserving MSR heritage and seeking inscription for it on the Wolrd Heritage List.

The symposium was organized by the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao SAR Government and the National Cultural Heritage Administration (NCHA) of China, with the support of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao SAR Government, the Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage and the Guangzhou Office for World Heritage Nomination of Maritime Silk Road Heritage.

It was the organizers' hope that the symposium can strengthen the technical support for the nomination with further academic research on related topics. It was also expected that Macao can continue to play a positive role in cultural heritage preservation and further integrate into the Belt & Road.

As an important transit point along the historic Maritime Silk Road, Macao joined China's City Alliance for Maritime Silk Road Heritage Conservation and Inscription on the World Heritage List in May this year.
