Ms. Judy Chu (Chinese name: 赵美心), the first and only American Chinese woman in congress,
came to visit Guangzhou this September.

Congresswoman Ms. Judy Chu (R.) interviewed by lifeofguangzhou reporter Shanna Chu.

"I am a daughter of China, now I am coming home. This most incredible eight days visit has made me better understand what China is about. I had a memorable visit to my home village of Jiangmen. I am truly coming home." Ms. Judy Chu (Chinese name: 赵美心), the first and only American Chinese woman in congress, came to visit Guangzhou this September.

Ms. Chu recalled the moment of winning the congressional seat two years ago with lifeofguangzhou, "President Obama called me the next day and congratulated me on becoming the first American Chinese women elected in history."

"China has really made great progress!"

Earlier this year, Ms. Chu was elected to be chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC). Together with congress members and CAPAC staff, Ms. Chu said the most memorable event of the whole trip was visiting her home village Jiangmen. The delegation paid a visit to Beijing, Nanjing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Jiangmen. "China has really made great progress," said Ms. Chu, "21 years ago when I was last in Jiangmen, single lane roads, no bridges cross the river. But this time I see 3-lane highways, magnificent highways, and all kinds of industry."

"My favorite subject is wine, since I'm from California."

When talking about the abundant types of agricultural products in the States, Ms. Chu expressed, "We have wonderful dry foods and nuts. But my favorite subject is wine. This is a particular mission of mine because I come from California."

"I was shocked that 50% of the wine consumed in China is from France, and only 5% is from America." Ms. Chu continued, "The blind taste competition shows that California wine can win over French wine. We have an area in California called Napa which is famous the world over. We need to explain to Chinese people about how great American wine is."

"Chinese women have made a great deal of progress."

Ms. Chu spoke positively of the role of women, and especially Chinese women, in politics. "Chinese women have made a great deal of progress. We have strong women's movements in America. We have many groups to encourage women to participate in American politics and push for women's rights. Such movements can be very beneficial for women in China."

Ms. Chu expressed that she works hard for the people of America, yet never dreamt that she would be in congress. "Hilary Clinton is a role model for me. I found her life very inspiring. The accomplishments she made are tremendous and very few women can achieve what she did in becoming a president candidate."

Ms. Chu shared with us stories of her busy life and even how she still manages to stay in shape: "I work in Washington DC and take a five hour flight back to Los Angeles every weekend. I go to three or four different events every night. People ask me, how can you go to three or four dinners every night and not get fat? The reason is I shake many hands but don't get a chance to eat anything; instead I go home and eat noodles."
