Free Parks in Guangzhou Get Mixed Responses
Guangzhou in southern China opened another 32 of its parks to the public free of charge on July 1, raising the number of free parks in the city to 169.
The 32 now free parks include Yuexiu Park, Zhujiang Park, and the Guangzhou Sculpture Park, according to a report from Guangzhou-based Nandu Daily.
Last year, Guangzhou made a few parks free to the public, a move that was popular with locals.
However, the recent decision to increase the number of free parks has received mixed response.
Mrs. Luo, a frequent visitor to Yuexiu Park, worries that the lack of an entrance fee may attract swarms of crowds and pollute the tranquil environment.
Many others agree, but officials say they plan to employ more workers to prepare for the increased number of visitors.
Free parks now account for 80 percent of the total 211 parks in Guangzhou.
