Shenzhen's Qianhai to be'Manhattan of S. China'
Shenzhen will work with Hong Kong to develop the Qianhai area, in Shenzhen's Nanshan District, into "South China's Manhattan," becoming one of the foremost service industry centers in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) area.
Xu Chongguang, vice head of the city's planning, land and resources commission, said at a press conference yesterday that the two cities' collaboration aimed at developing the Qianhai area in six fields, including innovative finance, logistics and media services.
The planned 15-sqkm Qianhai area strengthens the collaboration between Hong Kong and the PRD, and helps high-end service industries enter the mainland market, Xu said.
The development will make Qianhai a core of international cooperation and a second center of Shenzhen, after Futian District, he said.
"Futian is the center of the city while Qianhai focuses on serving the whole PRD region including Hong Kong," said Xu, adding that some industries will gradually move out of the Qianhai area.
"It is impossible for heavy polluters like the Nanshan Thermal Power Plant and the Moon Bay Power Plant to remain in this area."
In October last year, the State Council approved development of the Qianhai Bay Bonded Port Area, the ninth of its kind in China.
Shenzhen and Hong Kong agreed in June to establish a team to develop a service industry park in the Qianhai area, which, along with the city's western coastline, is designated to become a new engine for the city's economic development.
