In 203 B.C., Zhao Tuo, general of the Qin Dynasty, established the Nanyue Kingdom, with Panyu (Guangzhou) as the capital city. In 917, Liu Yan, a governor and military officer of the Tang Dynasty, established the Southern Han Dynasty in Lingnan, setting the capital city in Guangzhou as well.
Although the latter was founded after an interval of over a thousand years, its palace was build exactly at the same location of the former's, which is located in the west segment of Zhongshan Si Lu in Guangzhou, center of the city's historical downtown area.
