Guangzhou won One Belt Road Region Smart City Award at the World Smart City Awards ceremony during the Smart City Expo World Congress on September 23. The city stood out among 85 entries from 20 countries.

This is another international honor for Guangzhou in smart city development, following its 2025 wins of the China City Award and the global Energy and Environment Award. It highlights global recognition of Guangzhou's innovative practice of using digital and smart technologies to revitalize an old city.

The Smart City Expo World Congress, founded by Barcelona City Council and supported by UN-Habitat, the World Economic Forum and the World Bank, is dubbed the "Oscars" of smart cities. This year's One Belt Road Region Smart City Award focused on China and the diverse cultural regions along the Belt and Road. Over 130 delegations from 40 countries and regions attended the congress.

Guangzhou puts digitalization into the real needs of the people. Adhering to a people-centered and digitally inclusive approach, the city has been advancing smart healthcare, education, communities and elderly care to address public pain points in accessing services.
