As the only pristine island situated at the Pearl River estuary, Hai'ou Island in Guangzhou's Panyu district is home to numerous egrets. With a 13-kilometer loop path connecting rice paddies, mangroves, fishing harbours, and tidal flats, it is now a popular destination for cycling, camping, and family outings.

Today, large numbers of herons and egrets are found year-round at Lotus Hill in Shilou, Hai'ou Island, and the Shiqiao River. Species such as little egrets, grey herons, and night herons can often be seen foraging and nesting in these areas. Their growing presence is now regarded as a clear sign of Panyu's improving ecology.
