China's box office in 2026 has exceeded 21 billion yuan, or roughly US$ 3 billion as of July 28. Guangdong province continues its box office dominance for the first seven months this year, following its 2025 annual crown.
As the largest movie consumption market in China, Guangdong's box office has been leading since the Spring Festival holiday in February this year. As of July 28, it has surpassed three billion yuan, or about US$ 450 million, since January.
Among the 28 movies that hit 100 million yuan at box office, six of them are Guangdong-produced, generating a box office of 5.7 billion yuan, or US$ 800 million, accounting for nearly 27 percent of China's total. Dear You, which is about remittance letters between overseas Chinese and their families back home, or Kung Fu Soccer directed by Stephen Chow, are the two most popular ones with viewers.
In 2025, Guangdong authorities released 15 policies to support local films from creation, production to screening, and spent over US$ 20 million in support and rewards for outstanding films. The cinemas in Guangzhou also offered "cinema-plus" activities for audiences.
Guangdong has also deepened ties with Hong Kong and Macao through film events. These include the Hong Kong International Film and TV Market, industry gatherings in Guangzhou, and TV conferences in Shenzhen. These efforts are making the Greater Bay Area a big hub for China's film industry.
