UPDATED :2026-07-21

According to the South China National Botanical Garden, over 30 special varieties of tropical water lilies featuring chrysanthemum-like petals will soon be exhibited at its aquatic plant section. Known for their distinctive shapes and vibrant colors, these blooms add a striking visual element to the summer and autumn views, attracting many local residents and tourists.

These new varieties, cultivated over the past two decades, include cultivars such as Foxfire, Avalanche, Rachel Presnell, Ultra Violet and King of Siam. They emit a subtle, pleasant fragrance — making a stroll by the pond a truly refreshing experience for visitors.

Water lilies fall into two main types: tropical and hardy. In Guangzhou, the tropical water lilies go dormant in winter, grow in spring and summer, and come into full bloom in summer and autumn. Most tropical varieties stay open all day, allowing visitors ample time to enjoy them.
