A group of university students from Taiwan are spending their summer gaining firsthand experience in Guangzhou. They're exploring industries ranging from artificial intelligence and robotics to advanced manufacturing. The exchange program aims to give young people a closer look at the opportunities emerging in the Greater Bay Area.

This is Lu Bingrui's first internship, and his first hands-on experience with humanoid robots.

The mechanical engineering student from Taiwan is spending his summer in Guangzhou, learning how machines are designed, trained and deployed in the real world.

Before coming to Guangzhou, Lu had mostly learned engineering through textbooks and classroom training. The internship gave him a chance to work directly with robotics technology.

"When I first saw the robot, I was genuinely amazed. It made me realize how much more advanced this field has become and how much there is to learn."

While Lu is working with robots, other students are exploring different parts of Guangzhou's technology ecosystem. Qiu Siqi, a data science and AI student, is working on software-related projects during her internship.

Both students are among more than 130 university students from Taiwan participating in this year's Guangzhou Taiwan Youth Month internship program. They are placed in more than 50 companies and institutions across a variety of sectors.

The program also offers a chance to connect young talent with emerging industries.

The opportunities available to these students also extend beyond emerging startups. Large companies are opening their research platforms to young talent as they explore the future of energy technology.

Since 2018, more than 2,200 university students from Taiwan have taken part in exchanges and internships in Guangzhou.

For many of them, the experience offers a closer look at the industries shaping the future, and the opportunities they may find in a rapidly developing innovation hub.
