Guangzhou's Lettuce Festival: A 300-year-old tradition lives on

UPDATED :2026-03-11

The 2026 Kengkou (坑口) Lettuce Festival will fall on March 12-14, featuring vibrant activities such as enjoying lettuce feasts and lettuce wraps, spinning windmills, watching a lion parade of eight troupes, and touching clams and snails.

Held annually in Kengkou, Guangzhou's Liwan district, this festival boasts a history of over 300 years. It is recognized as one of Guangzhou's first batch of intangible cultural heritage items — a cherished tradition passed down through generations.

For local residents, lettuce (生菜) is the perfect homophone for "generating wealth" (生财) in Chinese. The festival offers citizens an immersive experience of the centuries-old cultural charm passed down through generations.

In 2026, Year of the Horse, the Kengkou Lettuce Festival will be creatively upgraded with horse-themed elements — where traditional folklore meets trendy creativity, doubling the festive fun!
