Guangdong leads China in R&D spending for ninth consecutive year

According to the recently released 2024 Guangdong Statistical Bulletin on Science and Technology Funding, the province has maintained its position as China's top R&D spender for the ninth year in a row. In 2024, Guangdong invested nearly RMB 14 billion daily in innovation, bringing its total R&D expenditure to around RMB 510 billion.
With R&D intensity reaching 3.6% of its GDP, the province now surpasses the European Union average (2.13%) and ranks behind only Beijing and Shanghai nationwide.
Guangdong is shifting from scale-driven investment to a structure geared toward breakthroughs, transforming from the "factory floor" into an "innovation engine."
