Once known as China's top port for domestic trade, the Guangzhou Port has achieved a historic shift in 2025. For the first time, foreign trade containers made up over 50% of its total container throughput, solidifying its new role as a pivotal hub for both domestic and international trade.

The port posted robust annual results, handling over 696 million tons of cargo and 28 million standard containers, keeping it firmly among the world's top six ports. Its growth in foreign trade was particularly strong, with foreign container throughput surging nearly 20%, a rate leading among China's major coastal ports.

This transformation is driven by a rapidly expanding global network. In 2025 alone, Guangzhou Port added 10 new international routes, including a maiden direct service from Nansha to the west coast of South America. It now operates 182 foreign trade liner routes, with 152 serving Belt and Road countries and 98 connecting RCEP nations. Its shipping links span over 400 ports in more than 100 countries, and it boasts the highest number of sister port relationships (60) in China.
