As the price of gold has soared in recent months, more and more younger generations are redesigning old-fashioned gold items rather than buying new ones.

On Changshou Xilu (长寿西路) in Guangzhou's Liwan district, jewellery and jade shops stand in dense clusters. As part of the Hualin (华林) Jewellery and Jade Business Circle — known as "China's No. 1 Jewellery and Jade Street" — the area has dozens of shops specializing in solid gold jewellery processing and gemstone inlays.

A shopkeeper on Changshou Xilu said, "I have noticed that young people are fond of solid gold jewellery these days. Among my customers who bring in old gold to make new style pieces, about 60% to 70% are from the post-90s and post-00s generations".

Compared to buying new ready-made gold jewellery, processing old gold is relatively cheaper. The service fee is only 10 to 40 yuan per gram, depending on the complexity of the work.

In addition, young people are attracted to handmade solid gold jewellery because it allows them to design patterns according to their preferences, fulfilling their desire for personal expression. For example, they can choose different auspicious inscriptions or cartoon patterns on the gold bracelet.
