Brushed by persistent cold air from the north, Guangzhou's cypress trees turned red in December, entering the year's best viewing period. The changing colors attract many locals and tourists to the city, since most plants in the city remain green in winter.
Cypress trees are common in botanical gardens, wetlands and parks throughout the city. The towering and upright trees get their name from the feathery foliage and usually thrive near water. The trees turn from green to yellow, then red and finally bronze, brightening the cold days with their ember-like glow.
At the newly-opened Yunxi (云溪) Botanical Garden or the Huangpodong (黄婆洞) Reservoir in Baiyun Mountain, you can walk along the trails and take photos with the flaming trees up close.
