It is part of a project to renovate newspaper stands in the city of Guangzhou using smart and digital technologies.

Some stands are being transformed into cafes, in partnership with fast food chains such as McDonald's and KFC, offering coffee, cold drinks, breakfast and even children's books. Some are being upgraded to vending machines and book lending and returning points, providing 24-hour service.

One of the renovated newspaper stands became a popular spot during the National Day holiday in early October. Featuring Lingnan characteristics and lion dance, the stand sells creative cultural products such as skateboards, bags, T-shirts, hats and fans, as well as newspapers and magazines. It also provides free water, WiFi and a first-aid box for people in need. There are four other such multi-functional stands in the Liwan, Yuexiu, and Haizhu districts of the city.
