Directed by Choy Ji and supervised by Stanley Kwan Kam-pang, the Hong Kong-Guangzhou-spanning film Borrowed Time held a premiere in Guangzhou on August 25.
At the premiere, the production team of the film shared the backstory with audiences.
Borrowed Time focuses on a soon-to-be-married girl, who has been plagued by the past of her family, traveling from Guangzhou to Hong Kong to seek her father, whose whereabouts remains unknown for 20 years. During her journey, she finds out the truth of her parents' marriage and reunites with a boy that she happened to meet once when she was little.
The film was selected for six venture capital projects and 18 international film festivals, including the 53rd International Film Festival Rotterdam and the 7th Pingyao International Film Festival. Both professionals and audiences were moved by its unique narrative structure and image atmosphere.
Shot in Guangzhou and Hong Kong, Borrowed Time gathered remarkable film creators from both cities.
"Our initial intention is to present the close connection between Guangzhou and Hong Kong," said Choy Ji, the director. "The core team consists a bunch of young people born after 1985. And we hope to tell a story by the talented filmmakers of both sides."
"I agreed to act as the executive producer of the film without hesitation because I believed that it would be a touching masterpiece," said Kwan Kam-pang, who is a renowned director himself. "Back in 2017 when director Choy Ji elaborated the story to me, especially the interrelation between the characters, I felt his attention and love for them, as well as his zest toward the film," he added.
Borrowed Time distinguished itself with the regional features and humanistic landscape of Guangzhou and Hong Kong, such as the idyllic scenery of the lychee orchards in Guangzhou, the warm lights of urban villages at night, and the hustle and bustle of Yau Ma Tei Wholesale Fruit Market in Hong Kong.
According to Choy, he insisted on creating in Cantonese dialect, which, to him, is the direct reflection of a city's culture and regional characteristics.
The film is released on August 27.
