144-hour in GZ: Tips for buying seafood on a budget

This year has seen more and more foreigners coming to visit Guangzhou since China implemented the 144-hour visa-free transit policy for travelers from dozens of countries.

Many are eager to know what delicious food can they try in the city. As the fishing off season of the South China Sea ended on August 16, the time for seafood has come. SilkRoadPost offers tips for relishing such cuisine at a reasonable price in the city.

Being the biggest market for aquatic products in South China, Huangsha (黄沙) Aquatic Products Market in Guangzhou is ready to welcome gourmets with freshly-arrived seafood varieties.

Amongst the first batch of aquatic products that have hit the market, several of them see a price drop of nearly one-third compared with previous cost.

Still, seafood is relatively high-priced product, which makes bargaining a necessary skill in the market.

First-time buyers who don't know much about the seafood may get played by shrewd vendors. But don't worry, SilkRoadPost has prepared some tips for the new hand.

1. Be patient and ask about the prices in different stalls. Then compare the quality of the seafood and the prices between stalls.

2. If you want to buy from a stall, remember to reduce the offered price by half. When the vendor shows reluctance, act as if you are going to leave. More often than not, you will get called back and get a good deal.

3. Confirm the price with the vendor, select the seafood on your own, and watch closely as the vendor weighs or counts the number of seafood and puts them into a plastic bag. Better to take your receipt before you leave.

4. If you are worried about the vendor cheating on the scale, try the public scale to confirm whether the weight of your seafood is correct.

For your information, seafood tastes best when it is cooked fresh. Right in the market, there are a number of seafood restaurants that can help cook the seafood for you. You will be charged a cooking fee for each 500 grams of the seafood cooked.

Transportation:
The market is located at the south of Suixing Square (隧兴广场), Conggui (丛桂) Lu. You can take Guangzhou Metro Line 1 and get off at Exit D of Huangsha Station, then walk for 480 meters to get to the market.
