After three years of construction, a new botanical garden in Guangzhou is set to open its doors to the public on August 8.
Located at the west part of the Baiyun Mountain Scenic Area, the Yunxi (云溪) Botanical Garden has a core area covering 35 hectares. It conserves more than 1,300 native and rare plant species ex situ, such as coix seed, mimosa pudica, Chinese swamp cypress, aquilaria sinensis, golden camellia, among others.
The most treasured plants in the garden are 57 pachylarnax sinica trees, a species under first-class state protection in China.
Five specialized gardens are set up to display new and quality flower varieties, water lilies, nectariferous plants, endangered plants, and melastoma candidum plants, respectively, providing a window into the biodiversity in tropical and subtropical regions.
The botanical garden gives full play to the design of classical Lingnan garden, which makes one feel like being in a moving landscape painting when walking inside.
Several ecological footpaths are built inside the garden. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll along the trails, and learn about different plants from more than a thousand beautifully-crafted information boards hanging along the way, each with a QR code.
After opening, the garden will hold regular plant exhibitions and organize various activities that combine science popularization and promotion of traditional Chinese culture.
