Guangdong Museum in Guangzhou has announced the return of museum nights every Friday from July 19 to welcome more visitors during this summer holiday.

To be specific, the museum is extending its opening hours till 8:30 p.m. on July 19, July 26, August 2, August 9, August 16, August 23 and August 30. It has also increased the daily reservation quota for visitors to 9,000 from the previous 7,000, with another 3,500 added on Fridays.

The quota is released on 10 p.m. every day, and visitors can make a reservation for entry within seven days.

The museum is holding a variety of high-profile exhibitions this summer, with related themed activities scheduled on Friday nights. Let’s take a look at some of them.

1.

An exhibition showcasing the art of the Roman Empire will run through October 13 at Guangdong Museum.

The 98 pieces and sets on display, including statues, frescoes, mosaics, silver wares and glass wares, all come from Italy's National Archaeological Museum of Naples.

The treasures were discovered at Pompeii and Herculaneum, ancient Roman cities destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D., or belong to the Renaissance-era Farnese family.

2.

Titled Shadow Puppetry in China, the exhibition displays over 300 shadow puppets from 20 Chinese provinces, as well as some from Thailand and Turkiye.

Co-organized by the Chengdu Museum, the event also presents puppet production tools, manuscripts, traditional musical instruments, and classic opera scenes performed by shadow puppets, offering visitors a comprehensive view of this intricate ancient folk art. The exhibition opens from July 17 to December 1.

3.

An exhibition featuring more than 100 exquisite artworks by leading designers and prime movers of the Arts and Crafts Movement pioneered by William Morris in the 19th century Britain is currently underway at Guangdong Museum, and lasts till October 30.

The exhibits, including book illustration, jewellery, furniture, textile, and household items, are collected by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. With elegant and sophisticated patterns, they manifest the artists’ pursuit of excellence and aesthetics of life.

4.

The Qing Dynasty artist Hua Yan (1682-1765) was known for his flower and bird, figure and landscape paintings. Nearly 70 pieces/sets of his works, collected by eight units from Guangdong, Liaoning, Fujian and Zhejiang provinces and Tianjin municipality, are now put on show at the Guangdong Museum, with precious cultural relics accounting for more than 90 percent.

The event, which will conclude on October 7, is the first systematic and concentrated exhibition of Hua Yan's paintings in Guangdong province and also the first domestic exhibition of original works with Hua Yan's paintings as the theme.

In addition to Guangdong Museum, from now to August 31, the Guangzhou Museum (Zhenhai Tower) stays open till 8:30 p.m. on Fridays, while the Memorial Museum of Generalissimo Sun Yat-sen's Mansion till 8:30 p.m. on Saturdays.
