Known for the flowering scene that resembles hundreds of tiny sparrows perched on vines that wind around trees, Mucuna Birdwoodiana is an iconic flower in Guangzhou during spring. This peculiar flower is affectionately called the "sparrow flower" by local people, and attracts them to come and take photographs every year.

Mucuna Birdwoodiana likes the warm and humid climate of Guangzhou. Viewing spots of the flower in the city include South China National Botanical Garden in Tianhe district, Baiyun Mountain in Baiyun district, and Tianlongxi (天龙溪) Natural Scenic Area in Huadu district.

In the South China National Botanical Garden, sparrow flowers burst into magnificent bloom in mid-March this year, with a blooming period of about 20 to 30 days. There are five varieties of sparrow flowers in the garden that bloom in spring, with colors in light green, pink, purple, and white.

Since this interesting flower is edible and has a sweet taste, people in Guangdong province make the flower into food. It can be cooked with meat, deep-fried in batter, or made into soup.
