Guangzhou has entered the best season to see fireflies. According to the South China National Botanical Garden (SCNBG), one of the best places in the city to see fireflies, May is the best time to encounter these beautiful creatures. “It is not sure whether it is possible to see them in June,” said Ji Shenmang, a senior engineer at the SCNBG.

Since this magical insects like to live in humid, warm places with abundant plants, the grassland in the Cycad Garden (苏铁园) of the SCNBG becomes the most attractive place for them. According to observers, fireflies begin to appear at around 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. every night when there is no rain during the day. Generally speaking, the best time to see fireflies is from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.. To make it easier for visitors to see fireflies, the deadline for admission of SCNBG has been adjusted to 7:30 p.m..
