Fire dragon dance parade for Mid-Autumn Festival to be staged

BY :Annie, Joyce

UPDATED :2023-09-19

As this year's Mid-Autumn Festival (September 29) approaches, some quaint neighborhoods of Baiyun district come alive with glowing dragons. Fire dragon dances involving hundreds of people will be staged for hours on streets, accompanied by roaring gongs and drums, as a traditional custom to pray for happiness and ward off evil.

Made by green vines and adorned with colourful lights, burning incenses, candles and even fireworks, the dragon varies from village to village. But the event generally involves a ceremony to draw the dragon's eyes and a grand parade.

As the dragon traverses the streets and alleys, visitors can be seen chasing the dragon's tail. And they are also invited to touch the dragon's head, which is believed to bring happiness and health.

Go and experience the charm of this intangible cultural heritage of Guangzhou.
