The Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television and Tourism on August 5 issued an action plan for building Guangzhou into a city of libraries (2022-2026).

According to the plan, 3,000 public libraries, including branches and service points, will be newly built in the city by 2026, which involve the second Guangzhou Library and the second Guangzhou Children’s Library in Baiyun district, the third Guangzhou Library in Liwan district, and the third Guangzhou Children’s Library in Haizhu district.

The new Haizhu Public Library and new Panyu Library are also expected to open within the period.

The bureau will accelerate the construction of the Guangzhou Science and Technology Library, with deepened cooperation with the municipal science and technology bureau and the South China University of Technology.

The plan points out that all libraries above town and street levels will be transformed into smart libraries and encourages libraries to build their own distinctive collections.

The share of resources between school libraries and public libraries will be achieved by 2024. And the city will strive to promote the exchange of literature with libraries in Foshan and other cities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

In addition, well-designed cultural spaces which integrate book reading, art exhibitions, salons and catering for residents will be created in the city’s business areas, industrial parks, tourist spots, transportation hubs, etc.
