The verge board which was carved out of wood, is thought to be made during the reign of Emperor Daoguang of Qing dynasty. The 860-centimeter-long and 28-centimeter-wide verge board is divided into 3 pieces and is reconnected with tenons.

The upper part of the verge board shows the city scape of Guangzhou, while the lower part depicts the beautiful scenery of the Pearl River.

The lower part is the earliest of its kind depicting the north bank of the Pearl River in Guangzhou in the early Qing dynasty.

Many landmark buildings of Guangzhou can be seen from left to right on the verge board, such as the West Fort, the City Gate of Guangzhou, the Flower Pagoda in the Temple of Six Banyan Trees, the Light Tower in Huaisheng Mosque, Zhenhai Lou Tower, Haizhu Fort, Tianzi Wharf and Pazhou Pagoda.

According to research, foreign trade in Guangzhou was quite prosperous in the early Qing dynasty as the city was among the few opening Chinese ports to the world.

Besides the human figures, various ships, hunderds of banyan trees and more than 40 houses and pavilions were carved on the verge board. It's also well worth mentioning that ripples were also carved to showcase the magnificent sight of the Pearl River.

The verge board, with a high value, adopted the method of scatter perspective mapping and the realistic carving techniques, vividly representing Guangzhou's landscape and the hustle and bustle along the Pearl River.
