Terrific news for Guangzhou consumers. People from the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area having consumer disputes while traveling to other Bay Area cities will be able to have the disputes dealt with in their home city, regional consumer councils have agreed.

Consumer councils of 11 cities within the Greater Bay Area signed a "Memorandum of Co-operation for Consumer Protection in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area" (MoU) in Macao on April 10, making consumer complaint litigation in the Greater Bay Area more efficient and easy.

According to the MoU, consumers can report the case to their local consumer councils on their return to the cities where they reside. The cases will then be transferred to the consumer council of the place where the dispute occurred.

The disputes will be dealt with in accordance with the relevant laws and regulations of the place of occurrence.

Earlier, consumers could only report the dispute to the authorities of the location where it occurred.

The MoU covers residents from nine cities in Guangdong province: Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Foshan, Huizhou, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Jiangmen and Zhaoqing, as well as those from Hong Kong and Macao.

The launch of this cross-border consumer complaint litigation service is expected to provide better protection for the consumer environment in the Greater Bay Area and make protection of rights of cross-border consumers easier, resulting in better interconnection among the nine cities in Guangdong and the two special administrative regions.
