A freight train loaded with goods pulled out of the Dalang Railway Goods Yard in Guangzhou on November 30, embarking on a 54-hour journey to the Nepalese capital of Kathmandu.

That trip marked the debut of rail freight service linking Guangzhou and Kathmandu — China’s first railway route to south Asian countries like Nepal and India, passing through both coastal and inland cities.

The rail line covers 6,070 kilometers through Sichuan Province, Chongqing Municipality and the Tibet Autonomous Region, among other locales, before it reaches the Nepalese capital. Its carriages were loaded with 19 million yuan worth of goods, including clothes, furniture, and home appliances.

The move is expected to help upgrade the industrial structure and economic development in the region as well as deepen ties with Belt and Road countries and regions.

Guangzhou has also established a freight train route to Russia which began operating in August.
