Caravanning, yacht tours, low-altitude flying and new world-class theme parks — Guangzhou is striving to become a more fun place for tourists by introducing these new projects by 2020.

According to the Opinions on Accelerating the Development of Tourism Industry released by the General Office of the People's Government of Guangzhou Municipality, the number of tourists to Guangzhou will reach 250 million by 2020 and foreign tourists staying overnight will hit 10 million, with its tourism revenue expected to reach 500 billion yuan. Foreign exchange earnings from tourism will hit US billion and the value added of the tourism sector will account for above 8 percent of the city’s total GDP. The city will adapt its tourist facilities, management and service to international standards, building itself into a world- famous tourist city.

New tourism projects to be developed

The city government will develop tourist resources like hot springs, hilly areas, forests, coastal areas, rivers and sea, in a bid to boost cruise travel, self-driving tour and lower-altitude tourism, a kind of travel experience where people have fun by using general aircraft and low-height aerocraft in low-altitude airspace. By 2020, Guangzhou will encourage social capital to establish 10 caravan parks, introduce and fund theme parks and develop outdoor cultural-oriented performances. The city will integrate the tourist resources including Canton Tower and the Pearl River, as well as Baomo Garden and Nanyue Garden to establish a 5A class scenic spot.

Support policies targeted projects

The Guangzhou authorities will give a maximum of 1 million yuan to newly established caravan parks, 2 million yuan to newly rated as five stars, 5 million yuan to newly established 5A scenic spots and 10 million yuan to newly established national tourist resorts.

Relying on the city’s advantageous position as a hub for both shipping and aviation, Guangzhou officials will further deepen cooperation with nearby cities including Hong Kong, Macao, Foshan and Huizhou to forge the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area tourist destination.

In order to cater for tourists’ demands, more international flights will be opened to help China Southern Airlines build its “Guangzhou Route,” a plan that will connect countries in Europe, Australia, Central, West and Southeast Asia by flights from Guangzhou and Urumqi, the capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Furthermore, the city is trying to extend 72-hour visa-free transit to 144 hours and carry out a 15-day visa-free policy for overseas tourists traveling in groups to China by cruise at Nansha Port.

The Guangzhou authorities will also implement a depart tax refund scheme for overseas travelers, establish duty-free shops at important ports and improve services for foreign currency exchange, transnational payments, logistics and postal services and communications.
