Metro Line 12, which runs through Ersha Island, will operate without a driver when it is completed and expected to put into use in 2023. It is the first ever long-distance driverless line of the Guangzhou Metro.

The only other unmanned line in Guangzhou is the APM Line in Tianhe district, which is short in distance and has a limited passenger throughput.

Line 12, running between Xunfenggang and Higher Education Mega Center South, has 25 stations, including Chatou, Baiyun Park, Luhu Lake, Taojin, Chigang and Guan Zhou. It mainly passes through four districts: Baiyun, Yuexiu, Haizhu and Panyu.

The whole line extends 37.2 kilometers, all underground. Its maximum speed is designed to be 80 kilometers per hour, matching that of Hong Kong's driverless South Island Line which opened in December 2016 and is China's first Grades of Automation 4 driverless automatic line. Trains used on South Island Line were independently developed and manufactured by the Chinese company CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles Co., Ltd.

Earlier in 1998, the world's first fully automatic unmanned metro line was officially put into operation in Paris. The Dubai metro today has the world's longest unmanned city rapid rail transit system. It is divided into two running methods, overhead and underground. All the trains are controlled by computer.

By 2020, 75 percent of the world's new lines and 40 percent of renovated existing lines will adopt fully automatic driving technology, according to the International Union of Public Transport (UITP).

Unmanned metro is considered the transit trend of the future. For example, by 2020, driverless lines will cover more than 200 kilometers in Beijing, accounting for one-fifth of its metro network and forming a huge unmanned network.

Metro lines in Beijing including the Yanfang Line, to be opened by the year end, are also researched and developed by CRRC Changchun Railay Vehicles Co., Ltd.
