According to the Bureau of Public Security of Guangzhou Municipality, 11 cases of drowning with 6 deaths have been reported since April this year. In Guangzhou, lectures about swimming safety has began at schools since early May. Although swimming is a great recreational sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, it’s important to know how to be safe while you’re in the water.

Here are some important swimming safety tips you should be aware of before you head out to the pool:

1. Stay hydrated — drink plenty of water.
2. Avoid drinks with soda, alcohol or caffeine.
3. Those who are beginning to learn how to swim should use floating devices.
4. Swim where a lifeguard can see you.
5. Always swim with a buddy; do not allow anyone to swim alone.
6. If you plan to swim outdoors, please protect your skin. Limit the amount of direct sunlight you receive between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and wear sunscreen with a protection factor of at least 15.

Considering the climate and the geographic location of Guangzhou, swimming is one of the best ways to stay fit in the city. The zero-impact, aerobic, full-body exercise does wonders for your health. Thankfully, Guangzhou has a ton of places to do some laps or just take a quick dip.
