The roadshow of the 2017 Fortune Global Forum held in Taipei on May 15 was met with enthusiasm and brought Guangzhou, the host city, under spotlight again.

The Taiwan press is looking at opportunities in Guangzhou from different perspectives and what they might mean for cross-strait cooperation.

The United Daily News of Taiwan recalled the 30-odd years of Guangzhou-Taiwan economic and trade cooperation. It quoted Cai Chaolin, vice mayor of Guangzhou, as saying, "The investment and trade between Guangzhou and Taiwan goes back to 1984 and keep growing over the years." According to Cai, more and more Taiwan companies are settling in Guangzhou, which shows that the city has a sustainable pull on investors.

Want Daily noted the rapid development of Guangzhou, which, Chiang Pin-kung, chairman of the Cross-strait Economic and Trade and Cultural Exchange Association, described as “felt different every time I come visit.” The newspaper also related Chiang’s expectation that participation of Taiwan’s business community in the forum would surely help enhance cross-strait exchanges.

Cross-strait Trade, a respected business journal in Taiwan, analyzed in detail the current agendas of Guangzhou, including the Nansha Free Trade Zone, the construction of “a smart city” and the 2017 Fortune Global Forum. It hailed Guangzhou as impressive in innovation, economic drive and development prospects.

The Economic Daily News looked at Guangzhou’s IAB (information technology, artificial intelligence and bio-pharmaceutical) projects and reminded Taiwanese businessmen of the potential of “the best city for business on the Chinese mainland.”

Commercial Times also predicted a “promising future” for Guangzhou and quoted Cai as saying that “the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is the most economically dynamic region in the world and could be home to a world-class cluster of big cities in 10 years.” It urged Taiwan companies to take advantage of the opportunities and board the express train of Guangzhou’s development.
