In the first quarter of this year, Guangdong province received 158,019 trademark applications, 22.9 percent more than the same period of 2016, accounting for 19.6 percent of China’s total and topping other provinces.

Among the applications, 115,881 were approved, 33.4 percent higher than in the first quarter of last year. Guangdong contributed 19.2 percent, or most of all the trademark approvals in the country during the first quarter.

By the end of March, the total number of active trademarks registered in the province reached 2,149,415, 23.8 percent more than a year earlier, according to the Guangdong Provincial Administration for Industry and Commerce. Guangdong is leading other provinces with almost 20 percent of the trademarks issued in China.

The number of applications for the international registration of marks under the Madrid system is also growing in Guangdong. The Madrid system is the primary international system that facilitates the registration of trademarks in multiple jurisdictions around the world and provides a means to simultaneously seek protection for a trademark in a large number of countries. By the end of 2016, 4,962 trademarks from Guangdong applicants were registered under the Madrid system, a yearly growth rate of 9 percent, ranking first in China, according to statistics from the Trademark Office of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce.

The top five cities in the province holding the most registered trademarks under the Madrid system at the end of last year were Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Foshan, Dongguan and Shantou. The five enterprises with the most registered trademarks under the Madrid system are Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., Gree Electric Appliance Inc. of Zhuhai, DJI Innovations (developer and manufacturer of unmanned aerial systems), ZTE Corporation and Guangdong Alpha Animation and Culture Co., Ltd.

As for the development of brands and trademarks, nine companies from Guangdong made the 2016 Fortune Global 500 list. China Vanke Co., Ltd., GD Midea Holding Co., Ltd. and Evergrande Group were new entrants and accounted for 30 percent of all the new Chinese companies on the list. Four Guangdong companies were also included on the World Brand Lab’s 2016 list of Top 500 Global Brands, accounting for one-ninth of the country’s total.
