The Guangzhou Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau announced a draft of regulations on February 23 to restrict high-pollution cars on roadways to improve the city’s air quality.

The authorities designate cars with two types of environmental signs: green and yellow, according to the draft.

Vehicles with green signs meet the national standards on exhaust emission, and vehicles with yellow signs are defined as high-pollution cars. Cars without green signs are banned to run within the city’s administrative region. Cars covered by the regulations must conform with other provisions or regulations that restrict traffic; Cars include vehicles carrying passengers or laden with goods and special-purpose vehicles using petrol, diesel or gas; Cars registered in Guangzhou or other cities have to abide by the regulations;  Military vehicles, police cars, fire trucks, ambulances and wrecking cars are not restricted when performing emergency tasks; Cars violating the regulations will be dealt with under related laws, regulations and policies of the city’s environmental protection, transportation and public security departments. The new regulations will take effect on May 1 and be implemented for five years.
