Guangzhou, known as a millennial commercial city and an important departure port of the "Maritime Silk Road”, recently unveiled a brand new city theme song, called “Our Song” (or "Fa Ge” in Chinese, with “fa” meaning rich in Chinese). The new theme song announces hope of future prosperity for all people, citizens of Guangzhou and those all over the world.
“Our song” is a new attempt to promote Guangzhou's image as “Flower City." A music video combines repeated lyrics and vivid animation effects, with uncharacteristically tongue-in-cheek humor with different homophonic and rhyming language, such as “Fa," "fun," "8” and “hua (meaning flower)." Mostly, the song offers a message of “luck and prosperity for all," describing an internationalized, modern and commercialized Guangzhou in a chirpy way.
Guangzhou has been developing into an “innovative, inclusive, open and sharing” modern metropolis, according to the Guangzhou Municipal Publicity Department, and the birth of this song aims to express wishes towards people in Guangzhou and foreign audiences. With elements representing luck and fortune in the song, it is expected that people can feel the openness, enthusiasm and passion of the city.
Guangzhou welcomes everyone to realize their dreams and fulfill their hopes here. Aisen Chen, an Olympic champion in Rio 2016, is one of the singers and a main cartoon character in this song. He arouses ardent public attention. “I like this catchy song with a profound meaning. Hopefully Guangzhou, my hometown, becomes a dream-come-true paradise for all the people," said Chen.
In the psychedelic music video, cityscapes as well as city flowers, Cantonese food, folkie and folk-customs are presented. “Gong Xi Fa Cai," the Chinese luck talk, spreads the song’s theme of prosperity. People will easily get the catchy chorus lines stuck in their heads. The video aims at overseas friends, especially young and hip, outlining the development of Guangzhou and welcoming the coming of 2017.
