The population of Guangzhou grew by 800,300 between 2010 and 2015, a jump of 6.3%, giving the city 13.5 million residents. The city’s population was 12.7 million in 2010. The city has 4.5 million families, and the average family size is 2.75 people.

These population figures came from a recent census survey of the city, released on July 5 by the Statistics Bureau of Guangzhou Municipality.

The bureau reports that males outnumber females in Guangzhou by more than 300,000, with the male population accounting for 51.24% of the city’s residents, compared with 48.46% for females.

When it comes to the age of the city’s residents, the share of both youths and the elderly grew slightly, while the percentage of people in Guangzhou between the ages of 15 and 64 has declined by 2.79% since 2010. Today 1.75 million residents are 14 or younger, a hike of 1.51% over the share of young people in 2010. The share of citizens 65 or older increased 1.28% since 2010, with 1.07 million city residents falling into that senior age category.
