A French concert featuring Jean-Pierre Smadja — known professionally as Smadj — will be offered at the Bel Ami restaurant in Panyu district on January 28. Smadj is an expert in performing on the oud, a pear-shaped stringed instrument played in the Middle East.

The event is part of a tour of 12 French bands appearing at clubs and live houses in several major Chinese cities throughout the year. The concert tour, French Music Rendezvous, is supported by the French Embassy in China and the Institut Francais de Chine (French cultural center in Beijing).

The 12 French bands will present a unique experience to Chinese audiences, with their styles ranging from classical jazz to blues to world music (or ethno pop).

Smadj is a Parisian musician who was born in Tunisia. His musical development came to be characterized by his transforming traditional jazz styles into eclectic sounds once he took to the oud instead of playing the guitar.

Though he released his first album in 1994, it wasn’t until 2000 that Smadj became recognized on an international scale for his signature blending of acoustic and electronic sounds.
