Zhang Xian, a world-renowned conductor, will come to Xinghai Concert Hall and give a performance with the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra this weekend. It is the first stop of her Asian tour, which includes upcoming visits to Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Zhang Xian is now the music director of the Symphony Orchestra of Milan Giuseppe Verdi in Italy. She’s the first female music conductor of an Italian symphony orchestra, and also the first female conductor of the Dresden National Orchestra in the 400 years since it was established.

Also the winner of the Maazel-Vilar Conductor's Competition, Zhang Xian was once the deputy conductor of New York Philharmonic Orchestra, then she went to Milan for her current post, which she began in September of 2009. She’s won high praise from Lorraine Maazel, one of the world’s most accomplished conducting masters.

This spring Zhang Xian is coming back to her native country and will appear with the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, the China Philharmonic Orchestra, the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and the China National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra. Zhang will open the Asian tour with Hector Berlioz’s, “The Roman Carnival Overture, Opus 9,” in Guangzhou. When asked about her feelings towards performing with the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra, Zhang said that she had been conducting regularly here with the orchestra every few years and could see the progress the orchestra has made each time.

Other highlights of the tour include Zhang’s first performances with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and the China National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra. As a promoter of productions by Chinese composers, Zhang will conduct the debut of Chen Qigang’s latest music in Hong Kong to end the Asian tour.
