An exhibition of artworks painted on newspapers by renowned Hong Kong artist, Water Poon, opened in Guangzhou on June 28. Themed "Chinese Dream," the exhibition is a celebration of the 20th anniversary of Hong Kong’s return to China.

A total of 56 pieces of artwork by the artist are being displayed at the show. The works, all painted on iconic newspapers from six Chinese cities – Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Macao and Taipei – depict the landmarks and folk cultures of those cities. From Beijing’s Tiantan Park on the People’s Daily and Guangzhou’s Canton Tower on the Guangzhou Daily to Taiwan’s Taipei 101 on the United Daily, the paintings creatively blend buildings and figures, as well as original images and texts, on the newspapers.

When talking about the reason for painting on news print, Poon said, “There are newspapers published every day around the world, with news and information on culture, arts and entertainment. Painting on newspapers is eco-friendly. And the images and texts on them become part of the painting, sending their own messages and reflecting history.” The works on display are his understanding of the “Chinese Dream” — peace, harmony and unity.

The show is jointly organized by the Guangzhou Journalists’ Association, Hong Kong Federation of Journalists, Taikoo Hui and Lingnan Fine Arts Publishing House.
