As their China debut, the Mark Morris Dance Group will perform at Guangzhou Opera House for two nights in May. The program includes three dances - "V," "Grand Duo" and "Festival Dance."
The American dance group is led by Mark William Morris, the American dancer, choreographer and director whose work is acclaimed for its craftsmanship, ingenuity, humor, and eclectic musical accompaniments. Morris is popular among dance aficionados, the music world, as well as mainstream audiences. The group is now celebrating its 30th anniversary. Although Morris' works are referred to principally as Modern Dance, in fact his works include and refer to many different varieties of dancing: Folk Dances of many cultures, Classical Ballet, Indian Classical dance, and Social dances.
In addition to the performance, two art talks will be held in University Town on May 17 and Guangzhou Opera House on May 19, entitled "Bridging Cultures through Artistic Expression."
The Mark Morris Dance Group was formed in 1980 and gave its first concert that year in New York City. Based in Brooklyn, NY, the company has maintained and strengthened its ties to several cities around the world. From the company's many London seasons, they have also garnered two Laurence Olivier Awards. MMDG is noted for its commitment to live music, a feature of every performance on its full international touring schedule since 1996. In the fall of 2001, MMDG opened the Mark Morris Dance Center in Brooklyn, NY, housing rehearsal space for the dance community, outreach programs for local children, as well as a school offering dance classes to students of all ages.
