Guangdong Modern Dance Company (GMDC) is presenting a program, What's Up, featuring works by the Company's dancers and two well-known choreographers, Xing Liang (邢亮) and Ma Shouze(马守则).
The program What's Up will be divided into two parts: What's Up I will be presented at the GMDC Small Theatre on April 27-28, and What's Up II will be presented at the same venue on May 18-19.
The young dancers of the GMDC, average age 25, are very creative as evidenced in many past collaborative works with guest choreographers. In productions like A Chronicle by Mister X and Yes, No & In-between, the dancers not just performed, but also improvised and contributed choreographic ideas into the dance. What's Up, however, stands out as the most demonstrative to the dancers' creativity, because every dancer is responsible for one piece of work, and the work reflects solely the artistic idea of that particular dancer.
What's Up also features two veteran choreographers who had been the dancers with the GMDC. Xing Liang, dancer of GMDC during 1993-98, is one of the most celebrated dancers of the time. He draws on his intensive experience in the physical art form and creates an expressive and exhilarating piece of work: Touched. Touched will be premiered in What's Up I on April 27-28.
Ma Shouze, one of the founding members with the GMDC, draws his inspiration from the Illustration Book of Tai Chi, by the famous scholar in the Song Dynasty, Zhou Dunyi, who exclaimed that "The Yin and the Yang match and deliver the multiplicity of many life forms, and the life forms then progress forever." Ma Shouze acknowledges this insightful thought by creating the physical dance: To Live, which will be premiered in What's Up II on May 18-19.
