Jointly sponsored by The US Consulate in Guangzhou and the Guangdong Provincial Museum, Chinese - American artist Xu Jianguo's excellent paintings will be on display at the Guangdong Provincial Museum from April 27 until May 8. It's the third stop of Mr. Xu's exhibition tour around China.
The exhibit will not only be a retrospective of Mr. Xu's forty-plus years of artistic achievement but also the first chance to appreciate his new style of painting known as "urbanity's mountains and rivers". This urban landscape was constructed over the course of twenty years and is highlighted by the new piece "Guangzhou Vistas". Composed of 10 fan-shaped paintings of ink on silk, each 28cm diameters, "Guangzhou Vistas" depicts the views from skyscrapers in Zhujiang New Town, the new city axis, towards the old town.
The show's other highlights include contemporary vistas of other metropolises including New York City, Hong Kong, London, Paris, Prague and other cities. These modern landscapes are portrayed in Mr. Xu's unique urban water ink technique, rendering familiar iconic cities in an unfamiliar serene aesthetic.
The show also contains Mr. Xu's monumental abstract painting "Origins" and more then 60 seminal pieces illustrating the creative journey the artist undertook from his roots in China to his artistic maturity in the US.
Mr. Xu's works have been featured in the Important Contemporary Chinese Art Sales of Christie's and Sotheby's, the top two auctioneers of fine art in the world. His paintings hang in the homes of private collectors in the United States, Europe and Asia, as well as public spaces like the City Center Theater in New York City.
