A Greek gastronomic festival organized by the Consulate General of Greece in Guangzhou is being held at the White Swan Hotel through the end of the month.

“It’s a challenge for us, because Guangzhou has lots of delicious food, and Guangzhou’s people love food,” said Grigorios Tassiopoulos, the consul general of Greece in Guangzhou, during the opening ceremony on October 13. “We hope they will love the Greek food.”

Stella Spanou, a consulting chef from Greece, brought delicacies from the Aegean Sea to Guangzhou for the city’s Greek culinary fans.

One menu item is souvlaki, one of most popular ways of serving meat in Greece. It’s marinated in red wine and then grilled (typically on a skewer). The meat is frequently wrapped in pita bread and topped with a variety of condiments - lettuce, tomato, onion, and tzatziki (yogurt and garlic sauce).

Baklava is what comes to mind when many people think of Greek dessert. It is a classic Greek pastry made with flaky phyllo dough layered with a cinnamon-spiced nut filling and bathed in sweet syrup. This yummy dessert is part of the hotel’s Greek offerings.

So is tomato cheese ball, a deep fried meat ball prepared with tomato, cheese and pure Greek yogurt.

Time: Through October 31
Venue: White Swan Hotel
