In summer, towns along the water attract a constant flow of visitors with their well-preserved old houses and picturesque landscapes of crisscrossing waterways. Guangzhou is surrounded by waterside communities where you can experience your summer days in typical Lingnan-style fashion.

1. NanWan
NanWan, located in Huangpu district, has strong classic Lingnan-style architecture. The beauty of this town is seen largely in the style of its ancient buildings and its waterside lanes. You can spend half a day walking along alleys, crossing bridges, visiting the Wenchang Tower, which was built in the Ming dynasty, and resting under the shade of 400 years banyan.

How to get there:
Take metro line 3 to Gangding station. Get out from Exit C, walk to BRT Gangding station, and take bus “b1 express” to BRT Xiayuan station and then walk to NanWan.

2. Dongchong
Located in Panyu district, Dongchong was built during the Song dynasty. Boat tours have featured a local characteristic that a girl who rocks the boat will improvise singing local folk songs. Also the town has a well-deserved reputation as a dining paradise, with steamed chicken and rice dumplings being popular local specialties.

Bridges in different sizes and shapes are the great eyes-catching features in these picture-prefect landscapes.
