Twenty “friendship” families from other countries and different Chinese cities have been selected to spend the 2017 Spring Festival with 20 local families in Guangzhou.

The friendship families, accompanied by their 20 local host families, will get to enjoy the experience of a special Cantonese-style spring festival and folk customs and also take in beautiful scenery and dine on the distinctive cuisine of Guangzhou, all for free.

Co-organized by the organizing committee of Guangzhou’s annual flower fairs and the Guangzhou Daily Press Group, the activity has attracted a lot of interest from the public.

A total of 5,001 families applied for the chance to become friendship families, while 500 local families sought to serve as their hosts. Most of the 5,001 families come from Shanghai, followed by Harbin. Even though only 20 families could be selected, this activity has drawn great attention from many more people at home and abroad.

Among the selected families are parents and children, lovers, brothers and sisters, and friends. They are primarily from Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Nanjing, Xi’an, Chengdu, Harbin, Yantai, Dalian, Wuhan, Malaysia, Canada and the United States. “I am so excited to come to Guangzhou,” said Li Jialing, one of the members from Malaysia, “My boyfriend and I have always dreamed to travel in Guangzhou, and then introduce its beautiful sceneries and delicious food to our friends.”

The group’s itinerary lasts for four days. The visiting families will arrive in Guangzhou on January 26 to meet their local host families and then take a Pearl River cruise. On January 27, they will explore the traditional flower fair, taste Cantonese dishes and tour the city. Over the next two days they will take part in art activities, watch folk performances, enjoy a sightseeing tour at Guangzhou Chimelong Safari Park and overlook Guangzhou from Canton Tower.
