The largest single day fund raising event for cancer research worldwide, the Terry Fox Run, will take place locally at Guangzhou Luhu Golf Driving Range on December 10.
Last year, with over 4,000 people participating in the Terry Fox Run in Guangzhou, the event raised 678,229 RMB for local cancer research. This year’s organizing committee is comprised of a cross section of local citizens interested in keeping alive Fox's dream of finding a cure for cancer. More participants are anticipated this year, and the proceeds will be distributed to a local cancer research institution.
Fox is a hero in Canada. Losing one of his legs to bone cancer, he showed the disease couldn't stop him from running across Canada on an artificial leg. That was in 1980. His 143-day journey across the country raised money for anti-cancer medical research. He died from the disease in 1981.
The annual charity run is named after this inspiring young Canadian and was launched by a group of followers who wanted to keep the young man’s dream alive. The Terry Fox Run has spread across the world.
The Terry Fox Foundation has issued a special edition T-shirt to mark the 36th anniversary of his "Marathon of Hope." Each T-shirt is available for 100 RMB. All proceeds will go to a local hospital or research institute identified by the Terry Fox Research Institute. Corporations and individuals can support by participating in a silent auction or making a donation in kind.
"We feel very excited to organize this annual charity event again," said Bahram Sepahi, regional vice president and general manager of Four Seasons Hotel in Guangzhou. "I believe the Terry Fox Run will become even more successful with everyone's joint effort. Our goal is not only to raise more funds for local cancer research, but also to increase public awareness on cancer."
The event organizers are the Four Seasons Hotel Guangzhou, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce Southern China and the Luhu Golf and Country Club. Other groups lending support include the Guangdong People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, the Consulate General of Canada in Guangzhou, the Guangdong Charity Federation, and the Guangzhou People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries.
