A new African football tournament, the Guangzhou Open African League (GOAL), closed out last Saturday with Future II winning the inaugural title in Guangzhou. After two weekends of qualifying with 40 teams, the finals saw the top 8 teams battling to take the title. Future II and Black Stars made to the final of the tournament. On Saturday Future II triumphed to take the trophy and first prize of USD 2,000.
MoneyGram’s GOAL has brought together the African community in Guangzhou, with nations from Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Senegal, Angola, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry, Mali, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Niger and Congo competing. The tournament has taken the African community by storm with its popularity, as it had to be extended to cater for all the teams that wanted to participate. Each week the hosting venue --- ACT Club was turned into a carnival with all teams and numerous spectators watching the games. It culminated in a pulsating finals day with the top 8 teams competing in front of the African community of Guangzhou.
The winning captain of Future II stated: “This tournament has been amazing as we have never participated a structured sporting event with such a great prize for the African Community. So many of our nations competed fiercely to win the title and we just did it! We are extremely grateful to MoneyGram for bringing this tournament to Guangzhou and we look forward to next year’s edition. For sure we will be back to defend our title!”
