High tech industries have become Shenzhen's leading pillar industry since the 1990s, when Shenzhen's government worked hard to develop new high-tech infrastructure. The investment paid off, and production value in the city has increased by over 40% year on year, reaching 488.5 billion RMB in 2005 and expected to exceed 600 billion RMB in 2006. Last year's production value increased by 140 billion RMB, 28.4% of the city's GDP, rising to 29.4% in the first half of 2006.
